Your wedding photos are the only thing from your wedding day that lasts forever. Choose your photographer carefully — this is not where to cut budget.

Finding Photographers

Start with referrals from couples whose photos you’ve admired. Then use Instagram (search wedding photography + your location), wedding directories, and Google. Build a shortlist of 5–8 photographers whose style you love before you look at pricing.

Styles to Know

Most great photographers do a blend — primarily documentary with confident portrait work.

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  1. Can we see a full gallery from a recent wedding (not just the highlights)?
  2. How many photos will we receive and in what timeframe?
  3. Are the photos delivered edited or raw?
  4. Who exactly will photograph our wedding — you or an associate photographer?
  5. What happens if you’re ill on our day?
  6. Do you carry backup equipment?
  7. Have you shot at our venue before?
  8. What do you need from us to do your best work?
  9. What is your payment and cancellation policy?

The Full Gallery Test

Always ask to see a complete gallery. Any photographer will have 20 stunning shots to show you. What you need to know is: are photos 300–500 also consistently good? Are the indoor flash shots as strong as the outdoor natural light ones? Are all guests photographed well, not just the young and photogenic?

On the Day

Brief your photographer thoroughly. Give them a shot list for group photos — including the names of who should be in each group. Tell them about any family sensitivities. Introduce them to your MC on the morning so they can coordinate announcements.

Allocate 45–60 minutes for couple portraits during the drinks reception. This is when your best individual shots will be taken.

Budget Guidance

Quality wedding photographers range from €1,500 to €4,500+ for a full day. Within that range, you’re paying for experience, consistency, and post-processing skill. Avoid the temptation of an enthusiastic amateur — the disappointment of bad photos lasts forever.
